Saving the Holiday Food for the Holiday

Am I the only one who gets so excited about special holiday foods that I want to start cooking and especially consuming them too soon? Here it is, two days before Thanksgiving and for over a week I have been wanting to roast a chicken, make gravy, and bake a big pan of stuffing and sit down and eat it all. And I have been telling myself to wait, as in, “good things come to those who wait,” and all that jazz.

And then I tell myself to think of something to cook that is totally the opposite of Thanksgiving food, but it is hard. I start wanting to do something with sweet potatoes. I ruminate about cranberry relish. I itch to bake a pecan pie. As I am the queen of self-denial, however, here is what we have eaten for the last few days:

Saturday: We were invited to a friend’s house, where we were given the treat of a very PA Dutch meal — slippery chicken pot pie and finely shredded cole slaw.

Sunday: Beef stew, French bread, and cheesecake

Monday: Steak with mushroom sauce, baked potatoes, salad, French bread

On the menu for tonight: Ina Garten’s Indonesian chicken, rice, and ??? (Trying not to think of green bean casserole…)

What are you cooking today?
